Takashi Shimizu once proved himself a capable director with the cult film Ju-On and the low-quality but still entertaining American remakes. “7500” from this director can be called a good crime-drama film, the events of which take place in one location, or rather in the cockpit of a passenger aircraft.
What is the movie 7500 about
This thriller is set on an airplane where the passengers soon find themselves threatened by supernatural beings and subjected to sudden violent death. Ryan Kwanten and Amy Smart co-star.
The plot is simple and straightforward, but at the same time the picture itself looks with interest, thanks to the acting presentation and the tense atmosphere of everything that happens in the frame. An hour and a half of running time flies by quickly.
So, the film has a good cast, although the performance of the actors can hardly be called ideal due to the fact that the script sags a little. Interpersonal relationships are well conveyed: a couple stuck on vacation together after breaking up looks pathetic, and the two main flight attendants have an interesting personal life.
On a technical level, almost nothing gets right in the film. There are two flight attendants looking after an entire Boeing 747 full of passengers, a paramedic who stops doing CPR after about 30 seconds, and a pilot who decides not to turn back and make an emergency landing and instead continue the rest of the eight-hour flight after just an hour later, a passenger dies on board. The whole film is saturated with such unfortunate surprises. For example, why does the pressure in the cabin decrease? These plastic bottles burst.
However, all technical errors could be forgiven if “7500” would be positioned simply as a horror film. This is the biggest mistake of a director. The suspense is weakly pumped – these are simulated moments of supposed horror that appear out of nowhere, which cause the audience to only sigh and roll their eyes instead of screaming.
Most characters die for no apparent reason. For most of the film, their corpses are not visible to anyone. This is very strange and looks like a big piece of history has been edited.
Meaning of the movie 7500
Usually Japanese horrors are on a par with the best horror films (The Ring, The Resentment, etc.). Unfortunately, this film shows that, for some reason, the director went out of his way to please the Hollywood public.
Let’s start with the good stuff… The concept and storyline is fresh and interesting – airplane horror. The tension, rising to the point of horror, is well filmed.
Now for the bad…. The characters are a stereotypical Hollywood horror cast: a young couple, a goth, a guy who can’t wait to get something, a pilot who’s having an affair with a flight attendant.
The 7500 looks cheap, the dialogue is so stilted that it causes unintentional laughter, and the characters have no backstory or depth. However, the praise goes to Nicky Whelan, whose performance is very realistic and at times quite funny as a clean-cut talker who feels the need to brag to any passenger in her vicinity. There are people like that in real life too, so this character is likable and pairs well with a supernatural element that falls short thanks to some of the most overused and cheap jump scares ever made in film. Without a creepy atmosphere and dead people, this flight is not interesting.
When things start to “happen” things get a bit confusing as “things” intersect with many horror genres, it doesn’t really make sense and just gets silly.
Seen in the movie and something ugly. Some of the acting and dialogue is a little amateurish. The director could have used a more international cast. The tension building in this horror scene is cut so that the viewer doesn’t really see the fate of the people on board.
Movie ending explanation
Weak at “7500” and the final part. In fact, there is practically nothing in it. There are literally no clues. Even attempts to bring some kind of logic to a random series of deaths do not make sense. Vedat is shot after Tobias attempts to save him. Screenwriter Volrath revealed that the choice of storytelling highlighted the “circle of violence” that exists in similar hostage situations. “The fate of Vedat shows that this cycle of violence will continue even if we try to stop it,” the screenwriter said. “A bullet is coming from somewhere else.”
Tobias is shocked at the sight of Vedat’s body pulled from the plane. Tears, sweat and bloodstains cover his face and clothes. Tobias is visibly shocked. When the police check the cockpit, they confirm the death of the hijacker and the captain, and then pull Vedat out of the plane. The viewer then sees the motionless cockpit, with Vedat’s phone ringing in the background.
These days, that ending is synonymous with saying, “And then they woke up and it was all a dream!” This is such a movie.
The film’s ending, when the characters find out they’ve been dead for most of the movie, is no longer a “surprise twist.” It looks like an excuse to the deceived viewer.
