In the United States, there are many holidays – for any occasion and for every taste. Among them is Father’s Day, which has been officially celebrated since 1966 every third Sunday in June. On this day, decent children should definitely pay attention to their fathers – at least call them. And on the radio somewhere, for sure, the song “Cat’s in the Cradle” (“Cat in the cradle”) will sound, which has become an invariable musical background for this holiday.
The song was written in 1974 by American folk musician Harry Chapin. More precisely, he composed the music, but we owe the theme and lyrics of the song to Chapin’s wife, Sandra.
It all started when Sandra heard a country song on the radio.
“The song was about a man and a woman sitting at the kitchen table looking out into the backyard. Looking at the swings, the sandbox and the bicycle in the corner, they regret that they used to pay little attention to the children, and now the children have abandoned them.
The song made Sandra reminisce about the strange relationship that existed between her first husband James Cashmore and his father, who headed the administration of Brooklyn at that time.
“During dinner, my father-in-law spoke to his son through me. “Tell Jimmy I’d like him to show up at the club on Tuesday,” he said. And I thought it was the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen. It’s not that they didn’t talk. They were polite to each other, but there was no real communication between them.”
As a result, Sandy wrote a poem about a little son who is very proud of his dad and wants to grow up like him. But the trouble is that dad constantly does not have enough time to communicate with his son (“it was necessary to catch the planes and pay the bills …”), although he promises that “we will have a great time, someday … “.
But now my father is getting old and retiring. Now he wants filial attention, and the son, on the contrary, is busy with his own affairs (“difficulties at the new job, and the children have the flu”). Well … The boy’s wish came true – he grew up like his father.
Harry Chapin decided to turn his wife’s bitter parable into a song only two years later – after they had a son, Josh. As the musician himself said, this song “scared him to hell.” Being on constant trips, he realized that he could repeat the fate of her hero. At his concerts, Harry presented “Cat’s in the Cradle” with undisguised self-irony:
“This song my wife wrote to punish me for not being home when Josh was born.”
By the way, it was Harry who added a mysterious refrain to the song:
And the cat in the cradle, and the silver spoon,
The sad little boy and the little man in the moon…
Some people think that the chorus was inspired by the old rhyme about the cat playing the violin and the cow jumping over the moon. Personally, I did not notice a direct similarity here, although I agree that Chapin was clearly trying to imitate the form of a nursery rhyme. Well, “silver spoon” is perhaps a reference to the famous English idiom “to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth” (similar to our expression “to be born in a shirt”).
When the label decided to release “Cat’s in the Cradle” as a single, Chapin’s wife was surprised. She thought “only 45-year-old men would like this song, but they don’t buy records.”
Sandy was wrong. In December 1974, the song topped the US Top 10, was nominated for a Grammy in 1975, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
By this time, “Cat’s in the Cradle” had become the go-to song for Father’s Day in particular and the relationship between father and son in general.
She is sung by Donkey in m-f “Shrek-3” when he finds out that Shrek will become a dad.
